| Environment Statistics Workshop to be held in Addis Ababa 11 July 2007 ECA's African Centre for Statistics (ACS) is organizing a Workshop on Environment Statistics jointly with ECA's ICT, Science and Technology Division (ISTD), Food Security and Sustainable Development Division (FSSD), the UN Statistics Division (UNSD) and the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). The workshop will be held at the UN Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 16-20 July 2007. The main objective of the workshop is to introduce a recommended core set of environmental statistics and indicators for national and regional reporting, and train participants from national statistical offices and ministries/agencies responsible for environment on basic concepts, methods and best practices in environment statistics. The workshop will provide a forum for exchange of information on the status of national environment statistics, as well as establish a network of environment statisticians among the countries as recommended by the Action Plan of the Environment Initiative of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD). Environment is quintessentially an inter-disciplinary issue and the workshop will, therefore, draw on expertise of statisticians, economists and relevant policies from global, regional and national environment conventions. The workshop will be attended by participants from National Statistical Offices (NSO) and Ministries of Environment from Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The workshop will also be attended by the following sub-regional, regional and international organizations: CEDARE, EASTC, ISAE, NESDA, IUCN-ROCA, SARDC-IMERCSA, ECOWAS, SADC, AfDB, FAO, UNDP and UNFCC.
