Press Release No. 12/2003ETHIOPIAN
PARLIAMENTARIANS TO GRADUATE ON E-STRATEGIES
Addis Ababa, 26 August 2003 (ECA) 36 Ethiopian Members of Parliament will graduate on Thursday, 28 August at 4:30pm in the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC) Delegates Lounge after a two-month ECA-sponsored intensive training on Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) with specific reference to e-strategies for development. The training was offered to the MPs as an effort to build the capacity of African stakeholders, which is one of the key missions underscored by the outreach programme of ECAs African Information Society Initiative (AISI). Held at the Information Technology Center for Africa (ITCA), the training comprised of a series of lectures and workshops on ICT policy issues and hands-on approaches to using ICT applications to enhance the MPs work as legislators. The MPs have also engaged in in-depth discussions on how to formulate national e-strategies, with examples derived from ongoing experiences by governments in a number of African countries. According to the Development Information Services Division Director, Karima Bounemra Ben Soltane, "We hope that with this orientation, MPs can fully understand the relevance of ICT policy in the development process and become ambassadors for promoting access to the Information Society in their constituencies." Invited to participate in the ceremony are key players in ICT policy-making in the Ethiopian government and ICT for development partners based in Addis Ababa. This training is a continuation of earlier awareness raising workshops organized by ECAs ITCA in 2001 and 2002 for African Ambassadors in Addis Ababa and delegates attending conferences at the UNCC.
