ECA Press Release No. 20/2003

LUSAKA TO HOLD FIRST SUB-REGIONAL WORKSHOP ON GOOD GOVERNANCE

Addis Ababa, 20 November 2003 (ECA) -- The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) is co-hosting with the African Development Bank (ADB) a workshop in Lusaka, Zambia from 24-26 November 2003 to discuss specific sub-regional dimensions and continent-wide perspectives on good governance in fourteen countries in Southern and Eastern Africa.

These countries are participating in ECA’s groundbreaking study to assess and monitor progress toward good governance in Africa. Based on 83 indicators, results from 28 countries will be published in the inaugural Africa Governance Report to be released in early 2004. ECA’s work is founded on country studies conducted in collaboration with local research partners.

The workshop will comprise researchers from the institutes that have carried out the governance study in Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. Government officials, civil society members, academics, and representatives from the private sector and media in the sub-regions will also debate the findings.

The results from the workshop will feed into the Fourth African Development Forum (ADF IV) to take place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 7-11 March 2004 under the theme, ‘Governance for a Progressing Africa’. ADF is an initiative led by ECA to set up an Africa-driven development agenda. ADF IV will provide the political space for a broad spectrum of interested parties to gain a deeper understanding of the dimensions of governance, address key challenges, coordinate existing initiatives, and develop strategies for the implementation and monitoring of good governance practices at the national, sub-regional and regional levels.

A further two sub-regional workshops are scheduled to be held before ADF IV. The second sub-regional workshop is scheduled for Accra, Ghana from 1-3 December 2003 to cover eleven countries in West and Central Africa. The last workshop will be held in Cairo, Egypt in January 2004 and will look at the Egypt, Ethiopia and Morocco country studies.
