ECA Press Release No. 10/2006

Experts to assess boosting research capacity for poverty reduction

Addis Ababa, 15 June 2006 - Renowned economists, researchers and policy analysts are among 150 participants who will attend a high-level meeting in Addis Ababa next week to discuss the impact of poverty reduction measures.

The 5th General Meeting of the Poverty and Economic Policy Research Network (PEP Network) will be held at ECA headquarters from 18-22 June 2006. Ethiopian government officials, embassy representatives, UN agencies and the donor community based in Addis Ababa will also attend this weeklong meeting.

The PEP Network is an organization funded by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC-Canada). It assists countries in building their research capacity in order to reduce poverty through better macroeconomic policies and micro-level interventions.

General meetings held by this Network usually provide a good opportunity to feature new methodologies and research findings on poverty analysis. The Economic Commission for Africa, through its African Centre for Gender and Development (ACGD), has been collaborating with PEP since 2004 to evaluate gender-based impacts of polices on poverty reduction. In 2005, they agreed to jointly organize an international conference to share views on recent advances made in poverty reduction in developing countries.

The Addis meeting promises to be rich, and will be all the more challenging as it is being held back-to-back with the 9th annual conference of the Global Trade Analysis Project (www.gtap.org), a consortium of international economists conducting quantitative research on international trade issues.

By hosting both meetings, ECA is seeking to take part in ongoing attempts by various stakeholders to implement concerted poverty reduction strategies and help Africa face daunting development challenges.
