Addis Ababa – 20 October 2008 – ECA - A series of important events will take place on Friday, 24 October 2008 (UN Day) as part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the Commission.

The daylong programme will consist of four major ceremonies.

The morning session will start at 10:00 am at the UNCC Main Entrance with a UN flag-raising ceremony to mark the United Nations Day (UN Day).

This will be followed by a ceremony in CR1 to launch the ECA Jubilee Book and Africa Hall Historical Project which the media are invited to attend. Some of its aims include getting the Africa Hall being declared as being of historical and cultural value and mobilizing resources for renovating and upgrading the building to include a museum/permanent standing exhibition related to historical events that have taken place there.

The afternoon session, still in CR1 will be dedicated to a ceremony marking the presentation of the First “Grinzane-Cavour Literary Prize for Africa”, an event jointly organized by ECA and the Italian embassy. The media are also invited to cover this event.

The evening session will be capped with an Ethiopian Cultural Evening hosted by the Government of Ethiopia, which will culminate in a ceremony jointly organized with the Staff Union, to recognize long-serving ECA staff members who have dedicated their lives to the UN for 30-50 years.
