This
page features information about projects currently in progress in
the areas of African Science and Technology.
The Leland
Initiative (LI) is a five-year, $15 million US Government effort
to extend full Internet connectivity to approximately twenty African
countries in order to promote sustainable development. LI seeks to
bring the benefits of the global information revolution to the people
of Africa through connection to the Internet and other Global Information
Infrastructure (GII) technologies.

The Database
on International ICT Development Projects in Africa lists the
activities of agencies with programmes and projects relating to support
for ICTs in Africa. The listings are being regularly updated with
support from a number of development agencies who have requested research
studies in this area, in particular the IDRC of Canada.

Informatics Network for Africa |
The Regional Informatics
Network for Africa (RINAF) project brings basic Internet services
(e-mail, bulletin boards, access to data bases, discussion lists,
etc.) to several African countries. RINAF's goal is to establish five
regional and ten national nodes.

The Project for Information Access
and Connectivity (PIAC), which is sponsored by the
Ford Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation, works with African
grantees and program officers of both foundations on issues of using
technology.

Potato Center |
The International
Potato Center, known worldwide by its Spanish acronym, CIP, sees
the potato and other Andean root and tuber crops as under-exploited
resources for agricultural development and hunger relief in developing
countries. CIP enables researchers to develop technologies where they
will be most readily used, and with the people who will most quickly
adopt them. Increasingly, this includes farmers, communities, and
local nongovernmental organizations.

The International
Development Research Centre (IDRC) is a public corporation created
by the Canadian government to help communities in the developing world
find solutions to social, economic, and environmental problems through
research. IDRC's List of Projects and Initiatives included on
their site are ACACIA, Bellanet, and the Middle East and North Africa Water Demand
Management Research Network (WDMRN).

an international effort to empower sub-Saharan African communities
with the ability to apply information and communication technologies
to their own social and economic development.

Education for Development is a university project for Africa
at Nkozi, Uganda under the direction of the Centre for Coordination
of Research of International Federation of Catholic University (IFCU).
The project studies community development and its ethical aspect
