Global Forum on Agricultural Research (GFAR), a stakeholder led initiative,
uses a triennial meeting as a planning tool to address its mandate
of stimulating cost effective partnerships and strategic alliances
for Agricultural Research and Development (ARD). The goal of GFAR
2003 was to review achievements over the last 3 years, identify new
and emerging global issues of relevance to ARD, develop a framework
of action that will consolidate on-going and promising partnerships,
and identify future partnerships to tackle priority emerging issues
for ARD.

This declaration by the Fifth General Conference of the African
Academy of Sciences recognizes the importance of and concerns about
the availability and use of science and technology. The Declaration
then presents an agenda for action to governments, the private sector,
and international partners. The agenda includes provisions on science
for sustainable development, use of the natural resource base, science
and the community, and funding. A vision for the twenty-first century
emphasizes education and the need for the androgynization of science
and for the ethical use of science and technology.

on Developing a Science and Technology Framework for NEPAD

Organized by the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD)
Secretariat and the South African Department of Science and Technology
Attended by African government officials, national and regional
economic bodies, and intergovernmental organizations, the first
NEPAD workshop on science and technology focused on the contribution
and utilization of S&T as optimal instruments of growth and
sustainable development on the African continent. Further discussion
included: the development of a science and technology framework
for NEPAD; a definition of priorities and plans for Africa's long-term
agenda for science, technology, and innovation; examining an integrated
approach for science and technology within NEPAD; and strengthening
partnerships and cooperation among African states.

S&T Cooperation for Sustainable Development |
The International
S&T Cooperation for Sustainable Development conference was
jointly held by the Korean Government and the Organization for Economic
Cooperation and Development (OECD) during November 15-17, 2000 in
Seoul. The conference aimed to identify barriers to cooperation and
propose recommendations for international S&T cooperation
so as to respond to global environmental problems while addressing
the needs of developing countries.
