Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (DSTI)

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Directorate for Science, Technology and Industry helps Member countries develop their economies by providing national governments information on: (a) recent trends in the scientific, technological and industrial environment in the OECD area, (b) the experience of other countries in selected STI policy areas, (c) the workings of scientific, innovation and industrial systems and their relation to general economic goals such as economic growth and employment, (d) the finding of suitable areas for co-operation in science, technology and industry and helping set up such co-operation, (e) the identification of areas of science, technology and industry where it would be useful to develop OECD-wide standards or rules of the game in order to avoid international friction, and assisting in formulating them.

World Bank

The World Bank is the world's largest source of development assistance, providing nearly $30 billion in loans annually to its client countries. The Bank uses its financial resources, trained staff, and extensive knowledge base to individually help each developing country onto a path of stable, sustainable, and equitable growth. See, in particular, the following Science and Technology-relevant sites:
  • The World Links for Development (WorLD) program provides Internet connectivity and training in education-oriented technology for developing countries teachers, teacher trainers and students. WorLD links students and teachers in secondary schools from developing countries with those in industrialized countries for collaborative learning via the Internet.

  • The Special Program for African Agricultural Research (SPAAR) is an open coalition that seeks to enhance the contribution of agricultural research for food security, environmental sustainability and economic development in Africa. Its principal mission is to promote institutional reforms of agricultural research institutions as a precondition for their sustainability and impact.

  • The Informatics & Telecommunications section brings the opportunities of the information age to emerging economies and assists them in becoming part of the global economy. The World Bank carries out its mission by means of loans and guarantees to developing countries and by providing advice and assistance with telecommunications sector reform and national information infrastructure strategies.

  • The Trade and Development Center was created to provide information to the community of Internet users who have a specific need for information on trade as it relates to social and economic development.  The site is a joint initiative of the World Trade Organization and the World Bank's Economic Development Institute, under a program called Information Technologies for Development (ITD).

  • The Africa Business Network is oriented towards the needs of investors in Africa. For small businesses, it provides general business help and "how-to" information in formulating a business plan, starting a business, financing and managing it. The site also includes a variety of information for larger businesses.
