planning advice to governments and acts as an international forum
for debate on food and agriculture issues.

The Research
and Technology Development section of FAO's
Sustainable Development Dimensions advises developing
countries on measures to improve research systems, and assists in
technology assessment and transfer. The division helps upgrade national
agricultural education, extension and training programmes and targets
technology transfer to resource-poor communities, rural women and
youth. It strengthens FAO member countries' capacity in communication
for sustainable development and promotes low-cost media and technologies.
The division helps developing countries use remote sensing, agrometeorology
and geographic information systems to monitor and manage natural resources.

The World Agricultural Information
Centre (WAICENT) is the FAO's strategic programme on information
management and dissemination. WAICENT provides the information systems
platform for accessing FAO's information resources and makes the accumulated
knowledge of the organization in all fields of food security and agricultural
development available to everyone.

The World Food Programme
(WFP) is the frontline United Nations Agency whose mission is to provide
"Food for LIFE" to sustain victims of man-made and natural
disasters; "Food for GROWTH" to improve the nutrition and

promote the self-reliance of poor people and communities, particularly

UNDP's Sustainable Development Networking Programme (SDNP) is
a catalytic initiative to kick-start networking in developing countries
and help people share information and expertise relevant to sustainable
development to better their lives. SDNP offers assistance in establishing
connectivity to national networks and the Internet, content aggregation
and user training in 39 developing nations and 36 small island developing
states (SIDSnet).

UNDP's INFO21 is an information and communication technology program
that aims to (a) raise awareness, build vision and advise on policies
to capture information and knowledge for development; promote and
build connectivity and necessary infrastructure for access to information
and development; (b) build required human and social capacities and
institutions and provide training and education to impart requisite
skills; (c) empower communities and disadvantaged groups, reinforce
participatory approaches and good governance and foster networking;
(d) help create new livelihood and employment opportunities; (e) conduct
pilot projects to demonstrate the feasibility, suitability and impact
of ICTs for SHD through electronic community centres; and (f) promote
partnerships between the public sector, the private sector and civil

Fund (UNCDF) works to reduce poverty in Least Developed Countries
through a variety of innovative approaches in both local governance
and microfinance initiatives. In both types of activity, the Fund

by the poor to resources and decisions essential to their empowerment.
