Popular
participation
In order to popularize ADF III messages and to
promote greater ownership and participation by larger groups of
Africans and development partners, inclusion of popular participation
events has become a key aspect of the ADF strategy. We strongly
believe in the harnessing of music, art and cultural activities,
as a means of engaging and inspiring people from around the continent
on the issues being debated at forums such as ADF. In keeping with
this, ECA plans to engage the wider public and provide restful interludes
in a number of ways:
African Mosaique: Weaving the Continent Together
| ECA, in collaboration
with African Mosaique is presenting a gala fashion show featuring
both traditional and contemporary African designs and designers.
Using traditional fabrics in new and innovative ways, African
Mosaique presents a stunning view of the diversity of African
culture while highlighting the ways in which the fashion and
textile industries contribute to the economy of the continent.

For ADF III, African Mosaique has had gowns
specially commissioned especially, not simply to celebrate
and honor the rich culture and creativity thriving in the
continent, but to symbolize the movement toward regional integration.
Designers from the various sub-regions of the continent will
be using fabrics and textiles from other sub-regions of the
continent to present inter-regional and continental inspiration
and creation. These one of a kind commissioned gowns will
then be auctioned off at the end of the evening to benefit
an innovative local child protection and development programme.

New Directions
In collaboration with M-Net, ECA will be presenting
a series of short films produced under the auspices of the New Directions
Initiative. New Directions is a South African initiative that works
to support young filmmakers around the continent and provide stimulus
to fledgling film industries.
The films will be shown at the UN-ECA during ADF
and then will be shown in town immediately following ADF as a means
of engaging the general public in Addis Ababa in the context of
a panel discussion on integration and the movement towards African
unity. Students will be the primary target audience for these screenings.
Art
Drawing on collections of art in Addis Ababa, ECA
is presenting an exhibition of African art that captures the mosaic
and spirit of African life and art forms. The exhibition will be
on display in the UNCC during ADF.
An art exhibition currently running in New York
City provides an interesting addition to the discussions at ADF.
The show, entitled "The Short Century: Independence and Liberation
Movements in Africa, 1945-1994" can be found at www.ps1.org/cut/short/index.html
Post-ADF
As ADF is an ongoing process, ECA has developed
strategies for to reach out to and involve people in the discussion
necessary after the actual Forum comes to a close.
Poster Competition
ECA is working to identify central themes and discussion points
from ADF for distribution to schools around Africa. Students will
be asked to contribute a design that expresses their understand
of integration and what it means for Africa. Once the designs have
been collected and winning designs are selected, posters reproducing
these designs will be disseminated to schools around Africa to serve
as discussion points on integration.
Anthology
The ECA is working with Revue Noire, a publication devoted to African
art from the continent and the Diaspora, and other organizations
to identify and contact young writers from around the continent.
An anthology that will use the words of young writers from the continent
to express their thoughts on integration and what it means for Africa
will be published within the year.
