New book on development suggests a roadmap for Africa to emerge from poverty

By Yinka Adeyemi, 12 April 2006

A new book by ECA economist, Abdoulaye Niang, has suggested concrete plans for African countries to emerge from endemic poverty and spring onto sustainable development through a shared vision built on self-sufficiency and broad regional integration.

Published by Ivy House, the book "Towards a Viable and Credible Development in Africa: The Push Factors" describes aid as "acquired impotency in development" and calls for a new generation of African leaders who will harness the wealth and natural resources of the continent for the benefit of millions of Africans who live in abject poverty.

In the book, Dr. Niang, who is the Team Leader of Agriculture and Food Security at ECA's Sustainable Development Division, explains how simple models can accelerate Africa's development and how a viable Africa can improve global economics and stability.

The author will formally launch the book and field questions at a forthcoming ECA seminar.
