The Economic Commission for Africa was awarded a certificate of Excellent Participation on Implementation of ASYCUDA ++ by the Ethiopian Customs Authority for its efforts on providing a range of courses for customs officials that would help support the ASYCUDA++ implementation.
The capacity building programme for the Ethiopian Customs Authority was initiated as a result of an official request to ECA from the Government of Ethiopia to build the capacity of its Customs Authority to effectively implement and maintain an UNCTAD software product, known as Automated System for Custom DATA (ASYCUDA), which is a computerized management system. The system handles manifest, customs declarations, accounting procedures, and transit and suspense procedures. It also generates trade data that can be used for statistical economic analysis and provides Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) between traders and Customs.
Currently, a web design and development training is underway at the Information Technology Centre for Africa (ITCA) which is designed to build the capacity of the customs officials to design and develop a system that would enable them interface the current ASYCUDA++ system with online management tools.
The training is part of activities of the ISTD towards strengthening ICT applications in socio-economic sectors as well as improvement of public sectors on effective delivery of services using ICT tools for African countries.
The programme is supported by the Africa Node of the Global ePolicy Resource Network (ePol-NET), Canadian e-Policy Resource Centre (CePRC) and the Government of Japan. |
