United Nations World Youth Report 2005

The year 2005 marks ten years since the General Assembly adopted the World Programme of Action for Youth in 1995. This report, an official report to the General Assembly, called for a renewed committment to the goals of the World Programme of Action, since over 200 million youth were living in poverty, 130 million youth were illiterate, 88 million were unemployed and 10 million young people were living with HIV/AIDS.

Youth and Education Trends and Challenges

Education helps young people prepare for adulthood. Learning occurs more intensely during childhood and adolescence than during any other phases of the life cycle. Education involves the development of physical or cognitive skills, the acquisition of knowledge, and the shaping of values, attitudes, and beliefs.

Nokia and Plan give a voice to Africa's youth

Nokia and international children's organisation, Plan, have joined forces to use modern communications technologies in Africa to raise children's awareness of their rights and opportunities. Nokia has provided an initial donation of 1 million Euros for 2006. The first stage of this new joint effort will see Nokia focus on supporting Plan's existing media and communications technology projects for Africa's children and youth.

FAO Rural Youth Development

Schoolnet Africa portal

SchoolNet Africa is dedicated to providing schoolnet practitioners in Africa with value-added information and a range of resources in support to the use of ICTs in Education initiatives at local level. We have developed this African SchoolNet Centre to provide information and resources for African schoolnet practitioners to enhance the implementation efforts.

The African SchoolNet Centre collects and houses information on national schoolnets in Africa and globally and provides space for networking and collaboration among schoolnet practitioners.

The International Union of Students

The International Union of Students was founded on the 27th August 1946 in Prague, by student organisations of 43 countries present at the World Student Congress (WSC). The International Preparatory Committee convened the 1st WSC sessioned in Prague and London. London was the temporary headquaters of the anti-Nazi students' coalition under the name of the International Student Council.

UNESCO: The Education Sector

UNESCO’s Education Sector comprises some 400 staff members worldwide. They are based at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris, in field offices and UNESCO’s institutes and centres specialized in education. The Sector is headed by Assistant Director-General for Education Peter Smith.

United Nations CyberSchoolBus

The United Nations Cyberschoolbus was created in 1996 as the online education component of the Global Teaching and Learning Project, whose mission is to promote education about international issues and the United Nations. The Global Teaching and Learning Project produces high quality teaching materials and activities designed for educational use (at primary, intermediate and secondary school levels) and for training teachers. The vision of this Project is to provide exceptional educational resources (both online and in print) to students growing up in a world undergoing increased globalization. The Global Teaching and Learning Project is part of the Outreach Division of the United Nations Department of Public Information.

United Nations Environment Programme: Tunza for Youth

The word “TUNZA” means “to treat with care or affection” in Kiswahili (a sub-regional language of Eastern Africa). The overall TUNZA Concept, therefore, is built around this theme. It is an initiative that is meant to develop activities in the areas of capacity building, environmental awareness, and information exchange, with a vision to foster a generation of environmentally conscious citizens, capable of positive action.

YES (Youth Education Support) International

YES (Youth Education Support) International is a non profit scout friends project in Africa providing education support to vulnerable young people and especially the orphans with an aim to encourage their physical, mental, social and spiritual development.

Youth Exchange and Study (YES)

Youth Exchange and Study (YES) is a program that was established in October, 2002 and sponsored by ECA to provide scholarships for secondary school students from countries with significant Muslim populations to spend up to one academic year in the U.S. The program is vital to expanding communication between the people of the United States and the partner countries in the interest of promoting mutual understanding and respect.

Young people and the Millennium Development Goals

The paper outlines how young people can be included and empowered as part of the strategies that Member States and the United Nations system are creating for the achievement of the MDGs. It can be used as a lobby tool and guide for programmatic action, but ultimately, it is a call to all Member States, UN specialized agencies, and civil society to create mechanisms for youth to participate in the implementation of the MDGs and take advantage of the work and activities youth are already leading.
