The New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD) is an African owned and managed initiative that embodies the vision and aspirations of African Governments, and their peoples, for development.
NEPAD was adopted in 2001 by the African Union Summit as the regional framework for Africa's development. In September and November 2002, the United Nations General Assembly, in resolution 57/2 and 57/7 adopted the position that NEPAD should be the framework within which the international community, including the United Nations system, should concentrate its efforts for Africa's development. In a nutshell, NEPAD has therefore become the fulcrum for United Nations system support to the continent.
NEPAD is structured into four major entities, namely:
The Heads of State and Government Summit of the African Union. It is the highest authority of the NEPAD implementation process
The Heads of State and Government Implementation Committee (HSIC). it comprises 3 states per AU region as mandated by the OAU Summit of July 2001 and ratified by the AU Summit of July 2002. The HSIC reports to the AU Summit on an annual basis.
The Steering Committee of NEPAD: It comprises the Personal Representatives of the NEPAD Heads of State and Government. This Committee oversees projects and programme development.
The NEPAD Secretariat coordinates implementation of projects and programmes approved by the HSIC. |
