About POPIA

The Population Information - Africa (POPIA) is an initiative led by the Sustainable Development Division (SDD) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) to establish an on-line space aimed at sharing and disseminating population and development-related information among African policy makers, planners and researchers.

This site was originally developed and launched on the web in 1999 under the name of Population Information Network (POPIN) -Africa for the 1st African Development Forum (Addis Ababa, 24-28 October 1999). In 2001, the site has been extensively revised and further developed under the assistance of the UNECA's Communication Team to become a more user-friendly and comprehensive population gateway.

You can find a collection of national, regional and international institutions dealing primarily with population and reproductive health issues in Africa, with links to their web sites wherever possible. A comprehensive account of population information resources, such as publications, bibliographies, data and indicators, best practices, tools etc. is given as well. As population is critically linked to development and vice versa, you can also find resources on other development issues.

If ever you want to share your own information, experiences, best practices or new findings in the field of population and development with other people or institutions, please contact us.

We look forward to our fruitful cooperation and networking with member States of ECA and inter-governmental and non-governmental organisations through this site. We hope that the site will contribute to serving Africa better by supporting our member States, IGOs and NGOs to implement national population and development programmes and the Dakar/Ngor Declaration and the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development.
