| Objective: To improve the capacity of member States to mainstream gender concerns in national policies, programmes and strategies in order to achieve gender equality and enhance the role of women in development in line with the commitments contained in various global and regional programmes of action. |

EA1: Enhanced capacity of African countries to formulate and implement gender-sensitive policies and programmes for accelerating progress towards women’s empowerment, gender equality and reducing poverty |

Main results to date: Result 1: Awareness on Security Council Resolution 1325 among African stakeholders is increased as evidenced by countries (Uganda and Liberia) introducing measures such as national plan of action to implement the resolution. Sierra Leone and Democratic Republic of the Congo are also working on developing their national action plans. In addition a training program on Gender and Security for African countries is designed by OSAGI and ECA will assist in the implementation of such program during the next biennium. A publication on Ending Violence against Women in Conflict Situations: Lessons drawn from the Rwanda Genocide is produced for advocacy purpose and will be disseminated to African countries by the AU (the lead Agency for this project.) Result 2: Awareness on the use of women’s human rights education and the World Program on Human Rights Education as a strategy to promote gender equality is increased in West African countries. among public officers IGO and NGOs members and this is evidenced by the inclusion of women’s human rights education in the education system of Burkina-Faso and the program of work of CIEFFA; The Guidebook on Gender Mainstreaming in Education is produced by the International Center for the Education of Women and Girls in Africa CIEFFA and the Regional Adviser is requested to build the capacities of some public officers and NGOs members involved in the project, on gender mainstreaming and women’s human rights issues during the testing process which include 4 West African countries, (Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, and Niger). The trial period which started the second semester of 2009, will end in 2010. Result 3: The Draft Model for Accelerating the implementation of CEDAW and the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights on Rights of women’s in Africa was adopted by African countries during the joint Conference of Ministers of Gender held in Addis Ababa by ECA and the African Union Commission in August 2008. Result 4: Report to improve good governance in Mali including the legal status of women and children was submitted and adopted by the head of States, members of the African Peer Review Mechanism during the last meeting of July 2009. As a result a national plan of action to promote good governance in Mali is elaborated and will be implemented .The Mauritius Report is under consideration. |
