Subprogramme 7 - Statistics
Objective of the Subprogramme:
To strengthen the capacity of member States to collect, compile, use and disseminate quality statistics for improved economic management and to track progress towards the achievement of internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals, in accordance with international standards and frameworks, with an emphasis on key demographic, social, economic and environmental statistics
Success story:
In the area of statistics and statistical development, several milestones were reached in 2008-2009 with critical support from ECA, opening wider possibilities for advancing the continent’s agenda on statistics and statistical development. Capacity building of member States was effectively supported through a number of technical cooperation activities. RPTC activities undertaken during the biennium contributed to strengthening the framework for statistical capacity development in Africa, which is expected to result in better evidence-based development planning and policy-making for achieving the MDGs and other development goals in member States. RPTC activities also contributed to enhancing awareness and knowledge of national statisticians of international statistical standards and best practices and strengthening capacity for collecting and analyzing socio-economic data for monitoring and evaluating progress towards the MDGs. RPTC also provided member States with the tools and skills needed to formulate and implement strategies to develop their national statistical systems and provide national statistical offices with new statistical knowledge. For example, advisory services have supported Botswana and Djibouti in the development of their NSDS.
