A data base on ICT in Cameroon

Cameroon is one of the countries selected for the second phase of the SCAN-ICT project. To this end, the official launchin of phase II in Cameroon took place on January 05, 2006. This phase which aims to carry out a survey of the penetration and the use of communication and information technologies in Cameroon, thus started by the formation of enquetors at the National School of Posts and Telecommunications of Yaounde from 05 to 06 January , 2006.

The project profits from the support of the Economic Commission of the United Nations for Africa (ECA) and it will be question at the end of this investigation of identifying and of evaluating the existing means of communication on the one hand and, in the other hand, to evaluate the level of knowledge, use and penetration of the ICT and in particular of the Internet. The collected data thus will make it possible to work out with the assistance of the Ministry of Posts and Télécommunications and the National Institute of the Statistics, of the reliable statistics on the ICT in Cameroon.

It should be noted that SCAN-ICT programme was born from the report made by the ECA that the African States, in spite of efforts made in term of programs of Information and Communication Technologies for the development, face the lack of precise, reliable and up to date statistical data in the field. To measure Information and Communication Technologies for the development and to find the good indicators are consequently a great challenge for all African countries. Recognizing this fact, the ECA and its partners launched the Scan-ICT programme in November 2000 as a joint project between the ECA and the programme ACACIA of the Research center for the International Development (CRDI), with the financial support of the European Union (EU) and Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD).

The purpose of the Scan-ICT programme is to develop the capacities of the African countries in the collection, the treatment and the distribution of the statistics on ICT for development. Scan-ICT will set up the framework for indicators of ICT at the service of development which will be useful for the formulation and follow-up of the national strategies (NICI), decision-making help for the projects of investments, as well as the evaluation of the impacts of the ICT on the development
