2007 Africa Symposium on Statistical Development
The second Africa Symposium on Statistical Development held in Kigali, Rwanda, in January, brought together 160 delegates from 46 African nations to discuss issues pertaining to the development of statistics in Africa.
The brain child of South Africa, in partnership with the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the symposium is an African initiative that aims at restoring statistical development on the continent by encouraging African states to carry out the compilation, analysis and dissemination of data that informs the work of policy and decision makers.
The Symposium served the dual role of encouraging African countries to participate in the 2010 Round of Population and Housing Censuses, and as an exchange forum for evaluating the general pace of achievement of the Millennium Development Goals in Africa.
In line with resolutions adopted during the first Symposium, in Capetown in 2006, the meeting focused on credible country-level monitoring for the Millennium Development Goals, which depends on the reliability and accuracy of data and information gathering and use.
