First Edition of ATPC II News Launched

ATPC II has launched its new newsletter ATPC II News. This edition of the newsletter is dedicated to ATPC II programming missions to the East African Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariats, and proposals on an African template for the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) between African countries and the EU prepared by ATPC and discussed at a workshop in Addis Ababa from 8-10 October 2008. The newsletter also reports on a recent mission of a team from the Gender Equality and African Regional Institution Project (GEARI) to Addis Ababa, and ATPC studies and events on trade facilitation.

ATPC II launched with Programming Missions to EAC and SADC Secretariats

As part of activities to launch the second phase of the African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC II), a programming mission was undertaken to the Secretariat of the East African Community (EAC) in Arusha, Tanzania from 8-9 September 2008. A similar mission was undertaken to the Secretariat of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) in Gaborone, Botswana from 25-26 September 2008.

ECA-AfDB-OECD- Latest “African Economic Outlook” Report Forecasts Stronger Regional Economic Growth in Near Future
Addis Ababa , 12 May 2008 (ECA) - The 2007-2008 African Economic Outlook report, jointly published by the African Development Bank (AfDB), the OECD Development Centre and the ECA, reports that Africa's rate of GDP growth is expected to strengthen to approximately 6.0 per cent in 2008 and that this level is likely to be maintained in 2009.

The key findings of the 2007 Economic Report on Africa (ERA, were presented last week in Brazzaville (Republic of Congo) to the Council of Ministers of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS). This was the first briefing session on the report for a sub regional body since its official launch in April in Addis Ababa, during the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development. ERA 2007, which was jointly published by ECA and the African Union Commission, focuses on the theme "Accelerating Africa's Development through Diversification.

ATPC Holds First Stakeholder Meeting
The African Trade Policy Centre (ATPC) held its first stakeholder meeting in Tunis, Tunisia on 30 April 2004. The aim of the meeting was to bring together several international agencies working on trade issues in Africa, national and sub-regional users of trade support services, and donor agencies to review activities of the Centre and discuss synergies between various programmes.

ECA's Trade Training Workshop for African countries in Agriculture opened in Tunis, Tunisia and is due to run from 26 to 29 April 2004. The four day workshop is being attended by African representatives and officials responsible for trade negotiations in ministries of Trade, Agriculture and at African embassies accredited to the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva.
