ECA SIA Secretariat

The secretariat in support of the Adminstriative Committee for Coordination (ACC) Steering Committee of the UN System-Wide Special Initiative on Africa has been established to:
 

(i) Facilitate and coordinate mobilization of political support and of resources globally, regionally and nationally;

(ii) Prepare draft progress reports by the co-chairs to the ACC, Steering Committee and other relevant bodies on implementation of the Initiative.

(iii) Monitor and evaluate implemenation of programs under the Initiative.

(iv) Participate in SIA country mission to promote the implementation of the Initiative at the national level.

(v) Identify and encourage the spread of " best practices" througfh newsletter, Web sites, local media outlets, etc.

(vi) Facilitate communication throughout the UN System by identifying and working with institutional focal points as nodes of an inter-agency network at headquarters and at regional levels

(vii) Design and implement strategies to feature postive information on Africa's development and on progress achieved under the Initiative.

The secretariat function is shared between ECA and UNDP, with the Executive Heads of both organizations appointed by the Secretary General as co-chairs of the Steering Committee. By virtue of its mandate and location, ECA has a comparative advantage in, and will take the lead in, carrying out ex-post evaluation of implementation as well as supporting activities at the regional level.
