Niger marks Africa Statistics Day with call for Africa to scale-up production of quality data

Niamey, Niger, 20 November 2017 (ECA) - The government of Niger on Saturday joined other countries on the continent in marking the 27th Africa Statistics Day with officials urging the continent to scale-up efforts to produce quality data that will guide policy formulation processes and improve the lives of ordinary people. 

The event was organized in collaboration with the Sub-Regional Office for West Africa of the Economic Commission for Africa (SRO/WA-ECA).


“The Africa We Want’’ not an unrealistic dream or wish, says AU’s Ouattara

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 21 November 2017 (ECA) - Realizing “The Africa We Want’’ should not be difficult if the whole continent collectively works together to transform the dream into reality, says African Union Commission’s Space Science Expert and Coordinator for GMES and Africa, Tidiane Ouattara.

In a keynote address at the ongoing AfricaGIS 2017 conference in Addis Ababa, Mr. Ouattara, an expert in the African Union’s Human Resources, Science and Technology Division, said; “The Africa We Want is not an unrealistic dream or wish. It is not a series of promises.”


Africa urged to use information efficiently for successful implementation of development agendas

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 21 November 2017 (ECA) - Africa needs to use information efficiently if it is to successfully implement the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and the African Union’s Agenda 2063, says Sultan Mohammed Alya, Director General of the Ethiopian Mapping Agency.


AfricaGIS 2017 conference opens in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 21 November 2017 (ECA) – The four-day AfricaGIS 2017 conference opened in Addis Ababa Tuesday with Oliver Chinganya, Director of the African Centre for Statistics at the Economic Commission for Africa reiterating the ECA’s strong commitment to support African countries in their quest to strengthen their geospatial and statistical information systems, and in advancing the results agenda through evidence-based policy formulation and management.


All is set for AfricaGIS 2017, says ECA’s Oliver Chinganya

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 17 November 2017 (ECA) – All is set for the AfricaGIS 2017 Conference, which is being organized jointly by the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) and EIS-AFRICA in collaboration with the Ethiopian Mapping Agency to discuss geospatial and statistical issues on the continent.

ECA’s Director of the African Centre for Statistics (ACS), Mr. Oliver Chinganya, says AfricaGIS 2017, which runs from 20 to 24 November, will set the agenda for geospatial information and statistics as critical tools in Africa’s transformative processes.


UN-GGIM:Africa Regional Committee Meeting

The main aim of the meeting is to review progress achieved on the implementation of UN-GGIM in Africa. The meeting will offer again opportunity to share knowledge and best practices on the development of geospatial information in the continent; raise awareness on the benefits to be derived through the utilization of geospatial information for sustainable development; look at policies, measures and steps that African countries could take to ensure a successful implementation of global geospatial information management in the region.


African Statistics Day 2017

African Statistics Day 2017 will be celebrated on 18 November 2017. Each year Africa celebrates this day to raise public awareness of the importance of statistics in all aspects of social and economic life. The theme of the Day this year is “Better lives with better economic statistics” and focuses on the critical role economic statistics plays in underpinning economic governance that leads to durable growth, and linking economic growth with better lives and better economic status for all citizens of Africa.
