Africa’s Green Minerals Workshops
Harnessing Green Minerals, the AfCFTA, Regional Value Chains and Domestic Resource Mobilization for Accelerated Inclusive and Sustainable Industrialization in Africa
Nov 2, 2026 Nov 4, 2026
United Nations Conference Center, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Background

The workshops form part of UNECA’s program on “Harnessing Green Minerals, the AfCFTA, Regional Value Chains and Domestic Resource Mobilization for Accelerated Inclusive and Sustainable Industrialization in Africa”. The program combines policy research, practical tools, and engagement with governments and partners to help African countries use their mineral resources for value addition, regional production, jobs, and greater economic opportunity. Over these three days, the program will present emerging findings and draft policy guidance to governments, experts, practitioners, policymakers, academia, civil society, the private sector, and other stakeholders, who can review, provide feedback, test them, and eventually use them.

On 2 November, the “Africa’s Green Minerals Study: Where Regional Value Chains for Critical Minerals Could Start” will examine evidence on existing capabilities and trade opportunities across African countries. Participants will help identify promising value chains, the barriers to connecting them, and priorities for follow-up through the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA).

On 3 November, the study on “Policy-Oriented Mapping of Green Minerals” will review preliminary findings on mineral endowments, production and data gaps. Your input will help validate the evidence, shape a useful mapping tool for policymakers and inform recommendations on mineral data, investment and value addition.

On 4 November, the presentations on the “One Voice One Strategy” report and the draft Policy Guidance on the African Green Minerals Strategy (AGMS) will consider how national implementation can reinforce regional cooperation and a shared African approach to external partners. Participants will propose specific improvements to the draft guidance and identify next steps for consultation and practical testing.
