Africa is well represented at the 79th United Nations General Assembly, and the ECA aims to focus on issues pertinent to the Continent’s priorities and centring young people in all conversations, such as during the September high-level week, which includes the Summit of the Future.
Mr. Claver Gatete, ECA Executive Secretary, will participate in the following key events, among others:
- On Friday, 20th September - African Youth at the Summit of the Future. This session is focused on Youth-driven Solutions and is co-organized by several African Member States, the African Union, the Pan-African Youth Union, and the United Nations. It seeks to amplify Africa's Youth Voices in high-level global discussions, including the New York stage, fostering their role as architects of a prosperous and resilient future, particularly on the continent. By leveraging their potential, Africa’s youth will be instrumental in addressing critical challenges, advancing economic empowerment, and positioning Africa as a key player in shaping global policy frameworks. - Establishing an African Credit Rating Agency is a high-level dialogue on Friday, 20th September, on an idea whose time has come.
- On Monday, 23 September 2024, the Executive Secretary will engage the media at the SDG Media Zone together with OSAA’s USG Christina Duarte, on Domestic Resource Mobilization: A Game Changer for Africa’s Development, as part of the Africa Section of DGC’s week-long discussion series called “Africa Renewal: Spotlight on the SDGs” during the high-level week of the UN General Assembly.

- Furthermore, he will participate in the UN Global Compact on Monday 23rd. This forum is convened annually by the UN Secretary-General during the High-level UN General Assembly week. This year’s UN Private Sector Forum, will explore pressing issues and policy barriers impacting sustainability today—and opportunities for tomorrow—including SDG acceleration; geopolitical disruption; sustainable finance; and digital transformation. Discussion themes will include: Accelerating Action for the SDGs, Responsible Digital Transformation and Financing a Sustainable Future.

- IDDA III: The theme of the event is:“Sustainable Industry for Africa’s Tomorrow: Building Resilience Across Generations” reflects the critical need for sustainable industrial development that not only addresses current challenges but also fortifies the continent against future uncertainties. It also underscores the necessity of Africa's industrial development being economically viable, environmentally sustainable, and socially inclusive. The event is jointly organized by AUC, ECA and UNIDO, in partnership with the African Development Bank, African Export-Import Bank, African Business Council, and Deloitte.
