Media Advisory: Conference on Land Policy in Africa 2023

18 October, 2023

The fifth edition of the Conference on Land Policy in Africa (CLPA) will take place from 21-24 November 2023 on the theme: “Promoting Sustainable Land Governance in Africa for Accelerating Implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement (AfCFTA).” The Conference will be held in a hybrid format, combining virtual sessions and physical participation at the African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

According to the organizers, the conference's theme aligns with the African Union Theme of 2023 - “Acceleration of AfCFTA Implementation.” In explaining the linkages between the issue of land and the AfCFTA, the organizers note that land is one of the key resources and enablers in the implementation of the AfCFTA and produces a significant percentage of the agricultural commodities that are envisioned to be traded. It is also a source of Africa’s mineral wealth and other commodities. Furthermore, manufacturing processes take place on land.

CLPA is organized biennially by the African Land Policy Centre a joint initiative of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the African Union Commission (AUC), and the African Development Bank. The Ethiopian government will co-host the meeting.

Participants include experts from government, academia, research, traditional authorities and other non-state actors, the private sector, and development partners.

The overall objective of the conference is to deepen commitment and strengthen capacity for land policy development, implementation, and monitoring in Africa through improved access to knowledge and information in support of evidence-based land policymaking. The dialogue will also foster improved networking, partnerships and resources for land governance and land policy in Africa.
