Expert Group Meeting on the African Gender and Development Index

Expert Group Meeting on the African Gender and Development Index
17 October, 2022 to 18 October, 2022
Addis Ababa

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) will host an expert group meeting on 17-18 October 2022 to review its flagship African Gender and Development Index (AGDI).

Taking place at the United Nations Conference Centre in Addis Ababa, the meeting will be an opportunity for a diverse group of government officials and development specialists to examine the index and its methodology.

Delegates will consider a summary – which highlights emerging developments and the lessons learned since the index first became available in 2004 – to recommend changes to the methodology, ensuring that the tool remains fit for purpose in the current context. Conclusions from the meeting will guide further development of the index.

Since 2004, the index has been supporting member States to measure the gap in the status of African women and men, and report progress on their international and regional commitments on gender equality. National governments in Africa have also used it to measure the impact of policies seeking to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.
