Multilingualism is at the heart of our work at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA). Listening, reading, speaking, and writing in more than one language deepen our understanding of one another, strengthen cultural awareness, and enrich collaboration across borders.
At ECA, we view language learning as a key driver of professional growth and organizational harmony. By fostering multilingual communication, we promote inclusion, broaden participation, and ensure that every voice within the UN community can be heard and valued.
Language learning empowers staff to express themselves with confidence, connect meaningfully with colleagues and partners, and expand their opportunities for career mobility across duty stations. It enhances the effectiveness of our daily work — from meetings and presentations to written reports and diplomatic exchanges.
Through the ECA Language School, we offer the opportunity to learn any of the six official United Nations languages, Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish, as well as Amharic (local language), and the newly introduced Kiswahili course, which further promotes linguistic diversity across the region. Courses are available both in person and online, making language learning accessible, flexible, and rewarding for all participants.
