The Intergovernmental Committee of Senior Officials and Experts for North Africa and the Intergovernmental Committee of Senior Officials and Experts for West Africa are statutory deliberative bodies that oversee the activities of the respective Subregional Offices of the Economic Commission for Africa as part of the programme adopted at the annual session of the UN General Assembly.

This year, the Intergovernmental Committee of Senior Officials and Experts for North and West Africa will be held jointly in Marrakech, Morocco from 1 to 3 November 2022. The theme of the first joint session is “Food and energy security in North and West Africa amid multiple crises”.

Parallel to this event, a joint Expert Group Meeting (EGM) will take place on 1 - 2 November under the theme: “Crisis Resilience and Development Sustainability in North and West Africa.” It will cover several inter-linked topics that the past crises revealed as key for resilience and sustainability.

These meetings are taking place against a backdrop of challenging global conditions, with member States seeking innovative and longer-term solutions to mitigate the impact of the many crises and embark on the path to a resilient and sustainable recovery.
 
In addition to considering the results achieved by the ECA Subregional Offices for North and West Africa, their upcoming work programmes and their strategic orientations in support to member countries’ development priorities, delegates and experts will discuss policy recommendations and identify areas of intervention with a focus on (i) Building resilient and sustainable food and energy systems in North and West Africa (ii) enhance the financing and performance of MSMEs taking into consideration women, youth and planet prospective  (iii) Taking advantage of the AfCFTA implementation to building forward resilient and sustainable Economies; (iv) seize the opportunities of demographic dividend and (iv) encourage the issuance of green bonds in North and West Africa.
