New Milestone in the AFCFTA-anchored Pharma Initiative’s engagement with Kenya’s Ministry of Health

Nairobi, 15 March 2024 (ECA) - The AfCFTA-anchored Pharma Initiative (Pharma Initiative) team of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) convened a two-day meeting in collaboration with the Kenyan Ministry of Health in Nairobi to review and provide comments on the Pooled Procurement Legal Instrument & Guiding Framework. This important meeting was organised in preparation for the upcoming Ministerial Meeting to be convened by the ECA in May 2024 where the documents will be presented to the Ministers for signature and endorsement.

The deliberations resulted in concrete feedback and recommendations, which constitutes Kenya inputs into CPPM and its legal instrument in preparation for the forthcoming Ministerial Meeting of participating pilot countries.

With similar reviews underway in Ethiopia, Comoros, Djibouti, Kenya, Madagascar, Rwanda, Seychelles and Sudan, this meeting marks a milestone in the implementation of the Pharma Initiative whose overarching objective is to help African countries advance the achievement of the AU’s Agenda 2063, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The efforts are critical to achieving SDG 3 on improved access to safe, quality, and affordable health products.

Furthermore, the Pharma Initiative contributes to building more resilient economies and accelerating industrialization in line with the ambitions set out in one of the New Public Health goals of the AU Agenda 2063 - that of ensuring that African citizens are healthy and well-nourished and adequate levels of investment are made to expand access to quality health care services for all people.

The meeting involved 11 participants from Kenya Technical Working Group (TWG) members drawn from various professional backgrounds, including legal, regulatory, trade, procurement, and pharmaceutical, from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of Kenya, Kenya Medical Supplies Agency, Ministry of Trade & Industrialization, Ministry of Finance, Public Procurement Regulatory Authority as well as the Ministry of Health's Directorate of Health Products and Technologies.
