ECA, ESCWA and the United Nations in Algeria join forces to support the modernization of the national statistical system

A joint scoping mission identified strategic, nationally owned pathways to strengthen Algeria’s statistical system, support evidence-based policymaking, and accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

Algiers, 1 October 2026 - The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) and the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Algeria conducted a collaborative scoping mission on Algeria’s national statistical system from 27 September to 1 October 2026.

Organized at the request and under the guidance of the Algerian authorities, the mission brought together national institutions involved in the production and use of official statistics. Consultations were held with the National Statistics Office (ONS), government ministries, the High Commission for Digitalization and other key stakeholders. The mission sought to identify achievements, national priorities and strategic areas in which coordinated United Nations support could contribute to the continued modernization of the statistical system.

The consultations highlighted Algeria’s significant institutional, technical and digital achievements. These include an an experienced national statistical office, extensive sectoral information systems, national identifiers and major investments in digital infrastructure. Ongoing and planned ONS operations on household expenditure and consumption, employment, enterprises, the informal economy, national accounts and regional statistics also provide an important foundation for more regular and geographically disaggregated statistical production.

This collaboration between ECA, ESCWA and the Resident Coordinator’s Office combines continental expertise, regional experience and country-level coordination. It will help align future support with the new United Nations-Algeria Cooperation Framework expected to begin in 2028 and avoid duplication with existing initiatives.

A stronger and more integrated statistical system will support Algeria’s implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals by providing more timely, reliable and disaggregated data for planning, investment decisions and policy impact assessment. It will also contribute to identifying territorial disparities and ensuring that development interventions reach the intended populations.
