30 Years Post-Beijing: slow but steady strides in East and southern Africa, more policies and implementation needed to expedite gender equality.

Media Advisory

Media representatives are cordially invited to join experts from the public sector, national statistics offices, civil society, private sector, and international development in a policy discussion and launch of a Regional Beijing+30 Report titled Gender Equality Response Systems in East and Southern Africa: 30 years after the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action to be held online via Zoom.

30 years since the Beijing Platform for Action (BPfA), East and southern Africa has made commendable progress in gender equality demonstrated by improved education, health, and women’s public and private sector leadership. However, despite gains, challenges persist—gender-based violence, including the rise of technology-facilitated GBV, economic inequality, and limited leadership in key areas persist. The sub-region faces new crises impacting women and girls including those related to conflict and climate-related shocks.

With gender data as a powerful catalyst for advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment, the event will provide an essential platform for unveiling the findings of this new report and discussing evidence-based policy recommendations to realize Beijing’s vision for all in East and southern Africa.
