Africa Day at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF): Harnessing Water and Energy for Africa’s Sustainable Industrialization and Inclusive Economic Transformation

New York- 18 July 2023 - Under the theme: “Harnessing water and energy for Africa’s sustainable industrialization and inclusive economic transformation,” the Africa Day at the High-Level Political Dialogue will deliver concrete recommendations to feed into policies that will focus on the challenges and opportunities to accelerate the achievement of the UN Sustainable Goals and of the African Union Agenda 2063. The virtual event will take place on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, from 8:30 AM to 11:30 AM EST/12:30 PM – 3:30 PM UTC via Zoom.

Background

Africa Day at the HLPF 2023 will focus mainly on countries presenting their Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs) in 2023:  Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Comoros, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Zambia.

The objective is to create a platform to exchange views, experiences, and best practices ahead of the SDG Summit of September 2023.

This Africa Day event will bring together African Member States, development partners, and experts to address challenges and opportunities of water and energy harnessing for Africa's sustainable industrialization and inclusive economic transformation.

The virtual event, will feature a high-level opening segment with welcoming addresses by the Chair of the ARFSD-9 Bureau (Government of Niger), the 78th President of ECOSOC, and the AU Commissioner for Economic Development, Trade, Industry, and Mining. It will include a keynote address by the AU Commissioner for Economic Development, Trade, Industry, and Mining. The event will also have a high-level interactive segment where African Member States presenting their VNRs will share experiences and best practices at the Ministers and/or Heads of Delegations level. Additionally, there will be a technical panel of experts and an interactive Q&A session.

The event is open to all participants, including high-level government officials from UN Member States, representatives from African regional institutions, the UN system, bilateral and multilateral partners, women and youth groups, civil society, the private sector, academia, African Think Tanks, and the media.

Organizing Entities

The co-organizers of the annual Africa Day at the HLPF are the United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on Africa UN-OSAA, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the African Union Commission (AUC), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and the African Institute for Economic Development and Planning (UN-IDEP).
