Economic Commission for Africa study: Currency devaluation alone won’t fix African trade imbalances, new study finds

New ECA research across 54 African nations reveals currency drops offer slow, limited boost to exports; calls for urgent shift toward industrialization and infrastructure.

Addis Ababa, 14th August 2026 (ECA) — Devaluing currencies is not a quick fix for Africa's trade deficits. A major new study released by the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) reveals that dropping currency values provide only modest and delayed benefits to exports, which are often preceded by initial economic pain.

The comprehensive study analyzed 20 years of quarterly economic data (2003–2023) across all 54 African countries. By tracking economic shifts over three-year windows, researchers found that structural bottlenecks heavily limit the power of exchange rate changes. This is especially true for countries in the CFA franc zone and nations that do not rely heavily on mining or oil exports.

The findings show that relying solely on currency adjustments will not solve persistent trade imbalances. Instead, the authors urge African governments to implement broad economic strategies to build stronger, self-reliant economies.

Key Findings

  • Slow Results: Currency drops bring tiny, delayed export gains and cause initial economic dips.

  • Structural Barriers: Fixed currency frameworks (like the CFA franc) and weak manufacturing limit policy success.

  • Broad Scope: The research tracked resource-rich, non-resource-rich, and pegged economies over a 20-year period.

ECA Policy Recommendations

  • Boost Local Industry: Accelerate industrialization to reduce reliance on commodity exports.

  • Ease Trade Barriers: Improve trade facilitation and cut red tape across borders.

  • Build Infrastructure: Invest in transport and digital networks to connect markets.

  • Ensure Stability: Maintain steady, predictable macroeconomic policies.
