Leveraging climate finance for decent jobs in Africa challenges and opportunities (Webinar)

29 September, 2025

Rabat, 29 September 2025 (ECA) - The ECA Office for North Africa will hold on Wednesday 1st October a webinar under the theme: Leveraging climate finance for decent jobs in Africa challenges and opportunities.

Participants will explore how African countries can strategically use climate finance to leapfrog to a sustainable development model and generate more decent, sustainable jobs. They will also examine the policy reforms and transformations needed to achieve this result.

Despite its limited contribution to global warming, Africa is currently the world’s most vulnerable region to climate change: according to ECA estimates, a +1° Celsius increase in global temperatures could lead to a 8 percent drop in African GDP. As Africa rises to this daunting challenge, climate adaptation is expected to cost the region between USD 30 and 50 billion annually over the next decade, i.e. 2% to 3% of the continental GDP.

The effective mobilization and use of climate finance can play an essential role in Africa’s transition towards a more sustainable development model, the creation of decent and sustainable jobs, and the building of resilient infrastructures that are critical for growth and the development of the private sector. Yet, in 2023, Africa received less than 5% of global climate finance.

According to ILO experts, up to 60 million new jobs could be created globally by 2030, in the renewable energy, waste management and natural resource sectors. According to the Fund for Youth employment, Africa could see the creation of 1.5 million to 3.3 million jobs in 12 green sectors by 2030, while the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) projects that appropriate investment policies could create around 4 million jobs in the African renewable energy industry 2030.
