Rabat, 18 November 2025 (ECA) - The ECA Office for North Africa is holding on Thursday 20 November a webinar under the theme: “Middle income countries trap: The case of North Africa.”
In North Africa, six out of seven presently fit the “middle-income” description: Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco and Tunisia. These countries’ growth, their ability to escape the middle-income trap and achieve high income status are currently challenged by new phenomena such as climate change, declining multilateralism and disrupting new technologies such as artificial intelligence.
This meeting seeks to shed light on the specificities of North African middle-income countries, how new and rising challenges are impacting their growth options and tools individual countries have at their disposal to overcome them.
The meeting recommendations will contribute to outlining a new analytical framework for North African middle-income countries’ development.
This meeting will take place with the participation of senior policymakers, experts, academics, and representatives from the UN, International institutions and the private sector.
