OIBC4 focuses on climate change and resilience, including loss and damage adaptation, food systems & food security. On climate change and resilience, the coalition is working on developing analysis to quantify losses, inform how this could be tracked across countries, and unpacking the L&D fund to enable contextual application in Africa.

Road Safety

Road crashes are disproportionately high in Africa compared to other regions of the world. The continent loses annually over 300,000 people through road crashes, even though its countries are witnessing the lowest levels of motorization in the world.
It has the world’s highest estimated road traffic fatality rate of 26.6 road deaths per 100,000 population compared to 17.0 in South-east Asia, a world average of 17.5, and 9.3 per 100,000 population in Europe.

Antonio M.A. Pedro is a Deputy Executive Secretary (Programme Support) at the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Africa’s premier thought leadership institution focused on generating knowledge and applying policy research in support of accelerated economic diversification and structural transformation. A mineral exploration geologist with more than 40 years’ experience, Pedro has broad experience of and exposure to international development issues and management at national, sub-regional, and continental levels.

The aviation industry has the potential to contribute significantly to Africa's economic long-term growth. The development of a more dynamic trade and the development of tourism on the continent are contingent upon the improvement of aviation services. Nevertheless, aviation transportation is one of the most strongly regulated industries in terms of both safety and economics. The safety-related regulations seek to mitigate the inherent risks associated with aviation, whereas economic regulation specifies, routes for airlines, defines their frequency, capacity, among other things.

Ms. Hanan Morsy is the Deputy Executive Secretary (Programme) and Chief Economist at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa.

Ms. Morsy has a wealth of cross-country experience and vast expertise in leading top-quality policy and development work and building strong partnerships, working in international organizations and the private sector. She has published on a wide range of economic and development issues and led a number of major flagship publications.

This transition is not just demographic but also has major economic and fiscal consequences. Already, cities concentrate economic activities and outputs generating a substantial proportion of Africa’s GDP.

Africa’s urban transition

Africa is the epicentre of global urbanization along with Asia. It has the fastest urban growth in the world. The continent’s level of urbanization rose from 35 per cent in 2000 to 43.5 per cent in 2020, and is expected to reach about 50 per cent by 2035. This megatrend will shift Africa’s demography but is also reshaping economic and social development considerably.
